The Mandela Centennial Scholars
Empowers Africa has partnered with The ALU School of Wildlife Conservation and their Mandel Scholarship program in order to provide a cost effective solution to fundraising in the United States by acting as their fiscal sponsor. As an established 501(c)(3), we are able to accept donations from U.S. donors and grant the funds directly to their projects.
African Leadership University is proud to partner with the Graça Machel Trust and the Mandela Institute of Development Studies (MINDS) to launch the Mandela Centennial Scholarship Programme, a landmark scholarship that will celebrate the 100th birthday of one of the greatest African leaders of the last century – Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, fondly known as Madiba.
Madiba firmly believed in the transformative power of education and its ability to bring dignity, self actualization and prosperity to Africans. Throughout his presidency and after, he dedicated much of his efforts to ensuring that children from all walks of life had equal access to education, regardless of their economic background. To honor his legacy and carry forward the important work he began in education, ALU is excited to partner with the Graça Machel Trust and MINDS to commemorate Madiba’s 100th birthday with a scholarship programme that will enable 100 outstanding young Africans from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend the ALU.
The objective of the Mandela Centennial Scholars Programme is to honor President Mandela’s legacy by identifying 100 high potential but economically disadvantaged young Africans to benefit from a scholarship and the unparalleled opportunities for leadership development that come out of African Leadership University in Rwanda. The students selected as Mandela Centennial Scholars will have demonstrated:
- Leadership potential
- Resilience in the face of adversity
- A commitment to carry forward President Mandela’s legacy of ethical leadership and social justice.
The beneficiaries will pursue fully funded degrees at African Leadership University in Rwanda in a discipline of their choice. They will also receive specialized mentoring, leadership training, work experience and access to powerful networks. Given access to these resources, we believe these young people will be equipped to lead change in their countries and communities and to champion the values that Nelson Mandela exemplified throughout his lifetime.
