Introduction
Large primates are primarily at threat from forest degradation and political instability in and around their habitats. This affects both mountain gorillas and Western lowland gorillas. Conservation of the species requires a multi-pronged attack and at Empowers Africa we support projects that address anti-poaching, community and tourism development, habitat expansion and transboundary collaboration across protected areas.
Why gorillas & great apes conservation matters
Gorillas and other great apes are more than inhabitants of Africa’s forests; they help shape the ecosystems they live in. As they travel through the forest feeding on fruit and dispersing seeds, they contribute to forest regeneration and the diversity of plant life.
Their survival is therefore closely connected to the health of the wider forest ecosystem. Protecting great apes helps safeguard the complex web of species and natural processes that these forests support.
