Introduction
Holding the dubious reputation as the most trafficked mammal in the world, insatiable demand for pangolins’ unique scales is driving the beautiful creatures to extinction. We support projects that collaborate with wildlife stakeholders and law enforcement officers to address wildlife crime, contribute towards much-needed research, and implement protection and rehabilitation projects on the ground.
Why pangolin conservation matters
Pangolins are the only mammals completely covered in scales, but their importance goes far beyond this remarkable adaptation. They feed almost exclusively on ants and termites, with a single pangolin capable of consuming millions in a year. Their foraging and digging also influence soil processes and can create opportunities for other species to use their burrows.
They are also slow to reproduce, with females generally raising a single pup at a time, and their young remain dependent for an extended period. Combined with their highly specialised feeding requirements, this means pangolin populations can be particularly difficult to recover once numbers decline. Protecting them is therefore about preserving not only a remarkable species, but an important part of the ecosystems they inhabit.
