Today is Shark Awareness Day 🦈
Â
Sharks are apex predators that have been around for over 400 million years, long before dinosaurs (and even most trees) came into existence. They live in tropical coral reefs, freshwaters, deep seas, and even the Arctic Ocean. While most sharks live 20 to 30 years in the wild, the blue shark only lives for 15-16 years. Some sharks live longer, with scientists discovering a life expectancy of at least 272 years in Greenland sharks.
Â
One unique feature of all sharks is their sixth sense, thanks to electroreceptors on their snouts. These sense organs enable them to sense the electric fields emitted by other animals in the water and hunt their prey. Sharks play a vital role in the marine ecosystem as they create balance in the food chain by feeding on smaller animals.
Â
Despite the bad reputation they sometimes receive, these oceanic giants rarely attack humans. On average, there are only 72 unprovoked cases of shark bites worldwide. However, about 100 million sharks are killed every year by humans. Many sharks are hunted for their fins, skin, and teeth. Some fall prey to overfishing, bycatch, and habitat threats caused by climate change and plastic pollution. Out of over 500 shark species, IUCN has listed 143 as vulnerable or critically endangered.
Â
Sharks are a breed of survivors who have survived 4 of the 5 mass extinctions. But, can they survive humans? The marine world is in desperate need of help. Stand up for sharks by boycotting shark products. Educate yourself and others on the matter and donate to organizations to support the conservation of sharks.
