Najin and Fatu are the last two northern white rhino alive on Earth. After the death of Sudan, the last ever male, this sub-species of rhino is now functionally extinct. Using his sperm, efforts to pioneer an IVF program to save the species from total extinction are continuing to save the species from total extinction, but these two ladies are a stark reminder of the realities of human-wildlife conflict, poaching and habitat loss.
Thank you @georgetheexplorer for such a captivating image and such beautiful words ️

Meet Najin and Fatu (hiding at the back), the last two remaining northern white rhinos on Earth. They live on @olpejeta, cared for 24/7 by an amazing team of rangers.
They are the last bastion of hope for the species. It’s strange knowing you’re photographing a functionally extinct species and, to be honest, unbelievably uncomfortable. That said, I left with a grand sense of optimism. The work that @olpejeta are doing is pushing new boundaries and maybe, hopefully, there’s light at the end of this very dark tunnel for Najin and Fatu’s future ancestors.
