Introduction
The cheetah is currently listed on the IUCN Red List as a vulnerable species and it is estimated that there are only around 7000 left in the wild, with a stronghold in Southern Africa. At Empowers Africa, we support cheetah conservation projects that tackle the key issues of habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict and competition with other large predators, through translocations for genetic diversity and habitat expansion initiatives.
WHY CHEETAH CONSERVATION MATTERS
Once ranging across much of Africa, the world’s fastest land animal has lost around 90% of its historic range, with only around 6,500 mature cheetahs remaining in the wild. Highly specialised for speed, the cheetah’s slender build allows it to accelerate rapidly, but leaves it less able to compete with larger predators. Lions and hyenas can steal its kills, while cubs are particularly vulnerable to predation. Cheetahs also face habitat loss, declining prey and conflict with people.
Protecting cheetahs therefore requires more than protecting individual animals. Maintaining connected habitats, healthy prey populations and landscapes where cheetahs can coexist with people is essential to giving this remarkable specialist a future in the wild.
