Empowers Africa made a grant to The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to continue their work rescuing orphaned elephants in remote areas of Kenya.
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) is the most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world and one of the pioneering conservation organizations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa. Orphan rescue involves rapid response to remote areas of Kenya. A rescue team is flown in by charter and the elephants are then transported by ground back to the Nairobi Nursery.
Through 2014 DSWT continued to give orphaned baby elephants a second chance at life and rescued 34 baby elephants from across Kenya. As of 2015, DSWT has rescued 190 orphaned elephants since the inception of its Orphans’ Project and has accomplished its long-term conservation priority by effectively reintegrating orphans back into the wild herds of Tsavo, claiming many healthy wild-born calves from former-orphaned elephants raised in their care.
The foundation embraces all measures that compliment the conservation, preservation and protection of wildlife. These include anti-poaching, safeguarding the natural environment, enhancing community awareness, addressing animal welfare issues, providing veterinary assistance to animals in need, rescuing and hand rearing elephant and rhino orphans, along with other species that can ultimately enjoy a quality of life in wild terms when grown.
