Empowers Africa Matches Donation to Help Reintroduce Lions to Akagera National Park

Empowers Africa has matched the generous donation made by Trustee Suzanne Leydecker to African Parks for their reintroduction of lions into the Akagera National Park in Rwanda. This is Empowers Africa’s second grant in 2014 to this project. The 1994 Rwandan genocide resulted in the loss of close to 1 million lives and the local extinction of lions in Akagera National Park. Twenty years after the incident and in celebration of Akagera’s 80th birthday, African Parks is kick starting this reintroduction by translocating eight lions into the park. The lions will be placed in temporary bomas for a quarantine period and to familiarize them with their environment. Empowers Africa is proud to be a supporter of African Parks.
