Grant Announcement: UNIZULU Science Centre

Empowers Africa is thrilled to announce a grant of USD 2,000 to continue our support of the Unizulu Science Centre (USC). USC, located in South Africa, is an interactive centre operating under Zululand University. The program has been operating for over 25 years and sees roughly between 28,000 and 30,000 learners per year annually (over 90% of which come from rural township areas). Moreover, the impressive math exhibit will be equipped to hold an astonishing five schools per day. The initiative focuses its educational efforts around outreach science and math programs directed towards underprivileged communities in rural South Africa. What was once a small but promising outreach program has now grown to the scale of a prosperous science centre. “Our goal for this visit is to galvanize interest in mathematics, an area South Africa and the KZN region desperately needs to improve” (USC).
This year’s grant from Empowers Africa will aid in maintaining the exhibits at USC including the recently implemented interactive math exhibit. Specifically, we direct our support to USC’s guided tours and interactive exhibits. In effect, this grant will aid in the advancement of USC’s efforts for scientific discovery and mathematical comprehension among this demographic of disadvantaged communities.
