African hooded vultures are now facing extinction with a decline of over 83% in the last three generations. This rapid decline is attributable to habitat loss, direct persecution, indiscriminate poisoning, and hunting for use in traditional medicines.

According to the IUCN Red List, it is suspected that a maximum of only 197,000 individuals remain. Currently, this species is classified as Critically Endangered.
