REPOST @AfricanParksNetwork…….⁣

Watch as this family of elephants enjoys a satisfying mud bath in @akagerapark. This park’s story is nothing short of remarkable, in eight years it has transformed from being inundated with 30,000 cattle and being plagued by poaching into a safe haven for wildlife. Species that had disappeared have now returned; lions were reintroduced to the park in 2015 and the population has since tripled! Rhinos were restored to Akagera in 2017 and with the addition of five individuals earlier this year the population continues to grow. Today, Akagera is Rwanda’s only Big 5 park, it attracts over 44,000 visitors a year, employment has increased and the park in now almost 80% self-financing thanks to tourism. This is a prime example of how a well-managed protected area can deliver benefits to people and wildlife alike.
