International Cheetah Day is celebrated on December 4th every year to create awareness about the plight of cheetahs and to appreciate the efforts being made to conserve these magnificent animals.
The cheetah is a large feline of the Felidae family that can be found in eastern and southern Africa. With a record speed of 70 miles per hour, the cheetah is the fastest land animal in the world.
Cheetahs are currently classified as ‘vulnerable’ by the IUCN. But, with only about 7,000-10,000 cheetahs left in the wild, scientists are calling for them to be uplisted to “Endangered.” The main threats to these shy, beautiful wild cats are loss of habitat, prey depletion, conflict with humans, and illegal trade.
