2020 may not have been the year any of us were expecting, but triumphs like these make us realise there were indeed moments to be celebrated! Congratulations @africanparksnetwork for some incredible achievements- and here’s to even more in 2021 🌍 🦒
Posted @withregram • @africanparksnetwork While witnessing the loss of a species is heart-breaking, there is nothing quite as hopeful as seeing its return. Together with our government and community partners, African Parks has returned several species to their former rangers over the years, including;
.
••• Black rhinos to @akagerapark in Rwanda after a 10-year absence in 2017
.
••• 500 Elephants moved from @liwonde_national_park and @majetewildlifereserve to Nkhotakota in Malawi to prevent habitat degradation and human-wildlife conflict in 2016 and 2017
.
••• Lions to Liwonde in Malawi after a 20-year absence in 2018
.
••• Cheetahs to Bangweulu in Zambia after almost a century of their absence in 2020
.
With many of these species under siege across their remaining ranges in Africa, translocations to well-protected areas are essential in giving populations a chance for recovery. The re-establishment and bolstering of viable populations improve the long-term prospects of the species, bringing hope for their survival while enriching the biodiversity of the parks for generations to enjoy.
