Today, February 14th, is #WorldBonoboDay. It also happens to be Valentine’s Day, which is no coincidence! Bonobos are known as the ‘make love not war’ apes; they are extremely sensitive, use love and empathy to sort out differences, and understand when other bonobos are in distress, consoling them when they can. Today really is the perfect day to celebrate them!
Sadly, bonobos are currently under threat from poaching and civil unrest around their habitats, mainly forests in central Africa. Though the size of the bonobo population is largely unknown, it has likely been declining for the last 30 years and scientists believe that the decline will continue for the next 45 to 55 years.
