Although Hyenas are now classified as “Least Concern” on the IUCN Red List, the population is believed to be decreasing outside of protected areas. Major threats faced by hyenas include habitat loss, persecution, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal hunting.
Habitat loss due to urbanization, agricultural expansion, and industrialization is a major issue, as it reduces natural prey populations and limits the amount of space hyenas have to roam and repopulate.
