Happy World Snake Day!
Although widely misunderstood, there is no denying that snakes are incredibly unique reptiles. There are around 3,700 different species of snakes all over the world that can be either land-dwelling and aquatic.
Snakes are ectotherms, meaning they cannot generate heat from within. Therefore, they rely on the sun and other natural sources for heat. They are adaptable feeders and can change their feeding habits to suit specific types of prey, and can even go over a year without food.
Snakes have been symbolized in different ways across various cultures. In Christianity, they are portrayed as forces of evil, and in Greek mythology, they bring good luck. It is easy to dismiss these beautiful creatures as venomous and dangerous, but their ability to transform and shed their old skin could teach us a lesson or two about starting a new life and breaking free of the things that hold us back.
