The African moon moth, a.k.a Argema mimosae, is a giant silk moth endemic to South Africa.

As a caterpillar, they feed on corkwood, marula, and tamboti plants. Once they become moths, they trade mouthparts for wings and live on energy stored during their larvae stage. Their green caterpillar body also transforms into a beautiful, furry coat.

The wingspan of an adult can measure up to 10-12 centimeters. The wings in the front have a distinct gray-colored “furry” edge along with emerald green coloration with yellow and red eyespots. The tail-like features of the rearmost wings a mimic piece of foliage, giving them the ability to blend into their natural environment. Their average lifespan is just a short 7-10 days.
