The Zambezi means “great river” in the language of the Tonga people. Together with its tributaries, the Zambezi River forms the fourth largest river basin on the continent. Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most incredible natural wonders, is located along the course of the this river.
The Zambezi River is an integral part of the ecosystem that supports Africa’s wilderness. Elephants and buffalos, Nile crocodiles, hippos, and monitor lizards can also be found along the river. One can also spot several species of birds like heron, pelican, and African fish eagles.
Over a hundred species of fish can be found in the Zambezi River, some of which are endemic to the this body of water. Tigerfish, yellowfish, catfish, and cichlids are some of the most popular species found here. The bull shark is also known as the Zambezi shark, aptly named after the river, though it can be found around the world.
