Posted @withregram • @africanparksnetwork Nkhotakota’s elephants are thriving! An Abundance Estimate Report on Nkhotakota’s elephant population, produced in 2021 in partnership with the @u.s.forestservice with support from the @usaid, indicates that the population has increased from around 585 individuals in 2017 to around 629 today! When African Parks assumed management of Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve in 2015, in partnership with the Malawian DNPW, it’s elephant population had been reduced from 1,500 to fewer than 100 due to decades of poaching. After security was restored and a fence line was erected, we safely translocated 350 elephants from @liwonde_national_park and 150 from @majetewildlifereserve to Nkhotakota. Dubbed #500Elephants, this historic translocation successfully bolstered Nkhotakota’s slowly declining population.
