The rhinos have landed in @zakouma_national_park – returning the species to Chad for the first time in 50 years! Our Zakouma staff were responsible for the unloading and release of the rhinos in to bomas, specially built enclosures to help them adjust to their new surroundings. They will be held here over the coming days and weeks until being released into the wider park, ensuring a safe transition to their new home. All too often, headlines on rhinos are about their demise as they teeter on the brink of extinction. However, today we are participating in an historic event and peering into a brighter future for this species which has persisted on this planet for millions of years. The extraordinary gains made in protecting and revitalising Zakouma result from our partnership with the Government of Chad and their commitment to conservation (supported with funding from the EU over the years), enabling this profoundly important reintroduction to take place and providing a genuinely hopeful story for rhinos across Africa.
