With barely 7,100 cheetahs left on Earth, shrinking habitat and competition from larger predators, cheetahs are a species that requires active conservation management. Samara Private Game Reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape works with local partners on a cheetah meta-population programme, which ensures genetic diversity by periodically translocating cheetahs to different regions and establishing new populations in areas where cheetahs have gone locally extinct.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We have recently funded two cheetah translocation projects with Samara. The first was to translocate 3 male cheetahs to Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa. The procedure went very smoothly and the animals are currently settling in well to their new home. The second relocation will be to send a female cheetah to Mountain Zebra National Park, which will take place over the next few weeks.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Both projects were generously funded by Empowers Africa trustee Krysten Ericson. Thank you so much to everyone involved for your efforts!⁣ 🐆⁣
