Happy World Lemur Day!
Today is celebrated to commemorate these beautiful primates and spread awareness to protect and conserve them.
Unlike monkeys and apes, lemurs are prosimians – a group of primates that rely heavily on their sense of smell to communicate with others within and outside their social groups. They play a major role in creating and maintaining forests as they disperse seeds and pollinate plants.
These unique, charismatic creatures face an uncertain future due to deforestation, poaching, climate change, and more, and are classified as either endangered or critically endangered according to the IUCN.
