The purple roller, also known as the rufous-crowned roller, is a medium-sized bird that lives in Sub-Saharan Africa. The purple roller is the largest of the rollers, measuring 35 to 40 cm in length.
This beautiful bird has pale colors and a harsh voice similar to its relatives of the same family. From afar, it appears to be a dull brownish bird with a white stripe over the eye, a white patch on the nape, and a dark square-cut tail. Their underparts are purplish-pink with white streaks.
Singles and pairs spend a lot of time perched on exposed snags in thornveld and drier woodlands and then swoop down to hunt large invertebrates and small vertebrates such as insects, spiders, scorpions, and small lizards.
