Enarau Conservancy was established in 2022 in the heart of the Maasai Mara under Kenya’s Wildlife Conservation and Management Act (2013). Co-managed with the local Maasai community, the conservancy protects and restores over 1,100 hectares of critical habitat with the vision to expand to 4,050 hectares as lease funds allow.
Nestled within the Northern Mara Conservancies, Enarau safeguards a diverse landscape of grasslands, forests, marshlands, and a permanent spring that sustains life year-round. This rich habitat supports a wide array of wildlife; from birds, butterflies, reptiles, and amphibians to iconic large mammals and serves to protect a critical wildlife corridor connecting to the nearby Mbokoshi Conservation Area.

Conservation Fund: Restoring wildlife corridor, expanding and protecting biodiversity habitats, empowering communities
Funding Restorative conservation, Research, and community wellbeing with a Focus on Creating a thriving conservation area for wildlife and people.
Enarau Conservancy is one of the community-owned and managed wildlife and biodiversity protection areas acting as the last line of defence for the Maasai Mara on its northern side, shielding the world-renowned wildlife sanctuary from extensive human activities. The landowners established the Conservancy in 2022 to protect threatened habitats, including forested areas and a critical 21-acre wetland that features a year-round stream, which breathes life into the Conservancy and feeds into the Mara River.
The area still bears the evidence of the destruction in years gone by. In the conservancy, a 336-acre patch of reclaimed land is undergoing restoration after three decades of intensive farming. The soil is now recovering slowly from the intensive use of fertilisers, pesticides, and other chemicals.
However, the Conservancy needed to do more than just persuade landowners to commit their land to conservation. It recruited a team to spearhead the conservation efforts, including a team of rangers to protect the integrity of the Conservancy by forestalling illegal activities. The team utilises EarthRanger technology, enabling real-time event tracking, including wildlife sightings, conflict reports, and ranger movement data.
