Devastating news as the worst attack to date claims the lives of five rangers and a driver in @virunganationalpark in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A sixth ranger was injured in the attack that took place in the central section of the vast reserve on Monday 9 April. The park is known globally for its population of rare mountain gorillas and its reputation as one of the most dangerous conservation projects in the world. This single attack was the worst in the history for the national park, where more than 170 rangers have died protecting wildlife, especially gorillas, over the last 20 years. This is a tragedy beyond tragedies and a horrifying reminder of the risks involved in protecting the people and wildlife who live in these conflict-ridden areas, targeted by rebels and militia for their natural resources. We pay tribute to these brave men for their sacrifice and send our deepest condolences to Virunga National Park and the surviving family members.
