The Congo Basin is one of the most significant wilderness areas on Earth. It is the second-largest tropical forest in the world behind the Amazon rainforest with a total area of 500 million acres, and is bigger than the state of Alaska. The Basin is spread over six countries – Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of Congo.
The Congo Basin is bustling with life and has a diverse mix of rivers, forests, savannas, wetlands, and flooded forests. It is home to around 10,000 species of tropical plants, 30% of which are endemic to the area. Several endangered species like lowland and mountain gorillas, forest elephants, chimpanzees, bonobos, and chimpanzees inhabit the lush forests of this enormous landscape.
