Today is #WorldOstrichDay!
Did you know that there are two species of the world’s largest bird, the common ostrich and the Somali ostrich? Both are flightless birds that rely on strong legs with two clawed toes used for running and kicking.
They are to be found in Africa’s semiarid plains and woodlands and although their endangered status is of ‘Least Concern,’ their populations are decreasing thanks to human encroachment of their habitats and the desire for their feathers in the fashion industry. In fact, in the 18th century, ostrich feathers were so popular in ladies’ fashion that they disappeared from all of North Africa!
And so today, we celebrate this enormous bird and spread the word about ostrich conservation tourism throughout Africa. Happy World Ostrich Day! 🪶
