World Whale Day 2022
Despite being the largest animal on Earth and the apex predator of the ocean, right at the top of the food chain, 6 of the 13 species of whale in our oceans are at risk of becoming extinct.
Whales have an important role in the overall health of our marine environment, playing a significant role in capturing carbon from the atmosphere and in turn, playing their part in the fight against climate change. Sadly, an estimated 300,000 whales (and dolphins) are killed each year, thanks to commercial whaling, oil and gas development resulting in habitat loss, climate change and general shipping activity.
On #WorldWhaleDay , communities and organisations come together to promote the conservation of whales through the promotion of safe shipping activities and tackling their threats. And today, we stand with them.
