Today is World Porcupine Day!
These large, thorny rodents are herbivorous, snacking on bark, roots, tubers, fallen fruits, and more. Porcupines are vocal critters and make several sounds such as shrill screeches, teeth chatters, and grunts.
Their quills are their primary means of self-defense. When threatened, the quills raise and vibrate, making the porcupine look larger than it is. And, if required, they charge their opponent with their back facing them to stab the attacker with their quills. Further, these hollow quills make them exceptional swimmers and tree-climbers.
Let us appreciate and celebrate these beautiful creatures!
