Today is International African Penguin Awareness Day
African Penguin Awareness Day is observed to raise awareness around the plight of African penguins and their rapid decline in population numbers. African penguins, also known as Cape penguins or South African penguins, are found on the southwestern coast of Africa.
Over the last century, their populations have fallen by 98%. Currently, they are classified as endangered by IUCN. These charming creatures are at huge risk of being extinct due to lack of availability of food, oil spills, habitat destruction, and overfishing.
