The world’s largest terrestrial mammals, African savannah elephants, were declared Endangered in 2021 by the IUCN, whilst forest elephants (found in the rainforests of central Africa) are Critically Endangered. The ivory trade is a huge threat to their future, alongside human-wildlife conflict and habitat loss. We support projects across the continent that focus on anti-poaching efforts, collaring and more to mitigate these threats, as well as with elephant sanctuaries who re-wild orphaned elephants.

Elephants are ecosystem engineers, shaping the landscapes they inhabit in ways that support countless other species. By opening up vegetation, creating pathways and digging for water, they influence the availability of food, water and shelter across the landscape. Their dung also helps disperse seeds and return nutrients to the soil, contributing to the regeneration of plants.

Their role extends across entire ecosystems. Elephants can carry seeds over long distances, helping plants regenerate far from where they were first eaten, while their movements create connections between different habitats. Protecting elephants therefore helps maintain the ecological processes that support a much wider diversity of wildlife.

Empowers Africa supports carefully selected conservation organizations working to protect Africa’s elephants. Through our Fiscal Sponsorship Program and strategic grantmaking, we help fund anti-poaching operations, satellite collaring and population monitoring, human-elephant conflict mitigation, habitat corridor protection, and translocation. Every organization undergoes rigorous due diligence and ongoing grant oversight.

Empowers Africa is a U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity connecting donors with trusted conservation organizations across Africa. Donations are tax-deductible in the United States. Through rigorous due diligence, transparent grant oversight, and ongoing reporting, we help ensure donor funds are responsibly managed and directed toward meaningful, measurable impact.
