Undoubtedly one of the continent’s most iconic species, the African lion is in danger. It is estimated that three-quarters of the populations on the continent are under threat in some way. At Empowers Africa, we support projects that focus not only on immediate conservation of individual species but wider management strategies that involve habitat expansion, lion translocations, anti-poaching efforts, and human-wildlife conflict mitigation.
Why lion conservation matters
Lions are the most social of the world’s cats, living in prides where individuals cooperate to hunt, raise cubs, and defend their territory. Their complex social structure is central to their survival and depends on sufficient prey, space and stable groups.
But the future of lions is also closely tied to the people who share their landscapes. Education, community engagement and practical approaches that help people and lions live alongside one another can reduce conflict and build greater tolerance for these iconic predators. When communities benefit from and value wildlife, they become an important part of its protection.
