Introduction

Across Africa, populations of once-widespread African wild dogs, also known as painted dogs, are steadily decreasing. Elusive but extremely recognizable, the principal threat to the dogs is human-wildlife conflict, primarily from poaching, snares, and a threat to livestock. Habitat fragmentation is also an increasing concern. Donations to the organizations that work to save wild dogs will go towards mitigation of conflict through monitoring efforts and the education of communities living close to populations.

Why Wild Dog Conservation Matters

With fewer than 7,000 African wild dogs remaining in the wild, this highly specialised predator represents one of Africa’s most threatened carnivores. What makes wild dogs particularly remarkable is the extent to which their survival depends on cooperation. Pack members share responsibility for raising pups, feeding one another and caring for injured or weaker individuals, while coordinated hunting allows them to pursue prey over considerable distances. Their social structure is not simply a way of living together; it is fundamental to how the species survives.

Wild dogs are also important predators of medium-sized antelope and other plains game, influencing prey populations across the landscapes they inhabit. Their endurance and wide-ranging behaviour mean that packs naturally move across large territories, often crossing beyond protected areas as they hunt, disperse and establish new territories. This makes their conservation particularly challenging, as the very behaviours that allow wild dogs to thrive can also bring them into close proximity with people and livestock.
