Congratulations to our friends and partners @africanparksnetwork who have successfully moved 154 elephants out of 250 from Liwonde National Park to Kasungu National Park in Malawi.
The move is an effort to restore habitats, alleviate human wildlife conflict and re-establishing Kasungu’s elephant population to ensure long term viability.
Congratulations to all involved for an amazing achievement!
Posted @withregram • @africanparksnetwork So far we have moved 154 elephants from @liwonde_national_park to Kasungu National Park in Malawi and ensuring each and every single elephants safety is a top priority for the team on the ground.
The translocation of elephants takes months to plan, but the time between darting an elephant and loading it onto a truck takes just minutes in order to reduce stress and minimize the risk to the animal. We also only move whole family groups as elephants are incredibly social animals, and keeping family groups together gives the herd the best chance of success in their new home.
This translocation is being completed in partnership with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and @ifawglobal, and has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Elephant Cooperation and other various philanthropic funders.
